Match 1 - 12th April 2009

Our first match of the year was held on a traditional Easter Bank Holiday - cold and wet!

But the weather didn't spoil the enthusiasm of the anglers quite as much as the Canadian Geese that were busy courting, displaying and generally splashing about.

Nevertheless, fifteen anglers went head to head, knowing that no matter what they caught a weigh in was essential to get those all important points for the league title.

A last minute bream hooked two minutes before the whistle and played out during the fifteen minute rule was the bonus fish that enabled Chris Russell to take first place from Tony Dobson's two mirror carp forcing Paul Oliver into a third position with 2lb 1oz of roach & perch.

We will take the next photo before the match so that we can catch everyone for posterity...

1st Place - Chris Russell 7lb 10.5oz 2nd Place - Tony Dobson 5lb 14oz 3rd Place - Paul Oliver 2lb 1oz

Match 2 - 9th May 2009

Despite anglers practicing for the match netting up to 30lb bags, the actual match resulted in a winning weight of just 3lb 11oz.

Paul Oliver took the honours helped by a mirror carp of 3lb to add to the 11oz of roach & perch for first place. Mick Linford came took second place with 2lb 12oz and John Hayes took third place with 1lb 14oz.

Match 3 - 7th June 2009

Our third match of the year was held what must have been the wettest morning so far this year.

Torrential rain before the draw, during the draw and for the first two hours took its toll on some of the anglers with a few packing up early to retreat to the warmth of their tourer or holiday home.

Nevertheless, ten anglers stayed until the end to enjoy bright sunshine that eventually shone through and of those only six managed to weigh in. No matter what the weight it was important to weigh in and get those all important points for the league title.

A dozen of the recently stocked carp put in an appearance, seven fell to Mr Fensome for a match winning total weight of 18lb 6oz, including the largest single fish of the day, a 5lb 7oz mirror.

In 2nd place was Neil Kilsby with 3lb 14oz and in 3rd place was Chris Russell with 3lb 6oz.

Thanks to George & John for their help in Gary's absence.

The brave ones...although still slightly damp.

Match 4 - 4th July 2009

Our fourth match of the year was held after the hottest week of the year, but thankfully temperatures has dropped slightly to bearable levels.

Sixteen anglers fished Grebe Lake and amassed the highest individual and combined match weights so far this year.

Once again carp featured in all of the top weights including a 5lb 4oz fish that made up part of the match winning 24lb 2oz all carp haul by Gary Setchell.

Tom Wilcox fishing his first match this year came in second with very good 13lb 10oz mixed bag of tench, carp, perch and roach.

Neil Kilsby took third with 5lb 7oz including one carp keeping the pressure on the points

If any of the anglers on the day took photos on their phones/cameras, can you let us have a copy (Gary forgot to take some - He says that he was too busy catching!)

Awaiting for your pics

Match 5 - 14th July 2009

Despite the torrential downpour earlier in the day, our first evening match started out as a beautiful summers evening with ten anglers eagerly waiting to get into the carp and bream that were fizzing and tail slapping all around the lake.

However after the first hour or so it was clear that although it looked like a bubbling cauldron in places, the bream and carp were not showing.

A few anglers switched tactics and went for Plan B, get some roach, rudd and perch in the net.

Tom Wilcox then managed to hook and land (after dropping his landing net in the lake) a fine 5lb 2oz bream.

Then the weather changed, the clouds rolled in a started dropping rain on the t-shirt clad anglers. Time was called at 9pm.

Tom took first place with a beam and carp haul of 10lb 7oz, Gary Setchell took second albeit due to a very late carp, with 2lb 10oz. The battle for third was close with only eleven ounces separating third and sixth places. IN the end Joh Powis took third with 1lb 9oz.

Match 6 - 2nd August 2009

Thankfully, the awful British Summer weather from Saturday had passed and although cloudy, there was some sunshine and blue skies.

A full lake of 18 anglers got the match underway and settled in for what turned out to be a long and rather uneventful match for half the anglers.

There was a conspicuous absence of roach and rudd showing and whilst the carp and bream were rolling and tail slapping not many were making their way onto the hooks.

George managed to hook a 'big one' and lost it. Tom managed to hook a carp early on and then lost it in weed.

Eventually though, three anglers were fighting it out at the end and a late bream and carp were just enough for Gary Setchell to land 1st place with 7lb 15oz.

Mr Fensome took 2nd with two carp for 7lb 6oz.

Mick Linford took third using a pole for the first time and being thoroughly startled by the way his two carp for 4lb 12oz fought on the pole.

Big thanks to everyone that took part and helped on the day.

Match 7 - 13th August 2009

On a beautiful summers evening, Grebe Lake provided some surprise catches and some interesting results for our second evening match of the season.

There was plenty of activity on the surface with loads of roach and rudd showing together with a few tail slaps and backs rolling from the carp.

An early small carp gave Gary Setchell a start and then he caught nothing for the next couple of hours.

All around him people were catching roach, rudd, perch and a few carp started getting caught around the lake. So with this in mind a late switch to the island proved the right choice as he hauled in another carp and a very late tench..

This was enough to give Gary 1st place with 10lb 2oz, a surprise late carp added to George Glass's bag of roach and rudd to let him poach second place with 4lb 10oz from Tom Wilcox's 3rd place with a solitary 3lb 15oz carp.

A special mention must go to 13 year old Jozef Hurst fishing his first match bagged 3lb 7oz of roach, rudd and perch. Well done!

Big thanks to everyone that took part.

Match 8 - 22nd August 2009

A change of venue for a one off match on Willow Banks before work on the new holiday home development starts again brought a few surprises.

No surprise was that the end peg nicknamed 'Anglers Dream' produced the match winning weight of 7lb 12oz of skimmers, roach, rudd and perch. John Hayes was the angler that drew the favoured peg and worked hard throughout the match.

One surprise that gave everyone a laugh was when Gary Setchell, fearing that his hooked tench was impossibly snagged on a large submerged willow branch, partially stripped and waded in only to find that the tench had freed itself and his hook was embedded in the bark.

Second place went to Paul Oliver with 4lb 12oz.

Ken Ives brought home 1lb to take 3rd.

A special mention must go to Roger McDonald who on his eighth match this year finally weighed in with a grand total of 4oz!

Big thanks to everyone that took part.

Match 9 - 6th September 2009

Seventeen anglers took part in the penultimate match of this years series held on Grebe Lake.

The anglers certainly had to work at it to bring in the fish today, some areas of the lake proved to be more difficult than others. Carp again featured in the winning weights as did another good bream.

In 1st place, once again, was Gary Setchell with a total weight of 9lb 11oz comprising three carp and some roach all caught on 14.5m pole fished to the island using sweet corn and red maggot.

2nd place with a single fish, was Chris Russell with a fine 6lb 10oz bream caught on ledgered pellet from peg 4.

3rd place with a carp & a few roach was Claire Setchell who was fishing maggot on a waggler. (She also managed to break Garys landing net handle when landing the carp - oops there goes the winnings!)

The highlight for many of the anglers was created by Ken Ives who turned his attention from his pole for a few seconds when a carp picked up his bait and promptly pulled his pole into the lake.

Much to everyone's amusement the pole then floated as it was towed some 70-80 yards 3/4 way around the island. The pole was eventually snagged by Dave Swaden with his ledger road and returned to Ken, minus the carp!

Match 10 - 20th September 2009

The last match of the 2009 series was fished by a full compliment of 18 anglers taking every peg on Grebe Lake.

A perfect morning weather wise held lots of promise for the early risers.

Some surprise lovely bream found their way into anglers nets including a nice 5lb 15oz specimen that fell to Neil Kilsby.

At the end of the match though it was a late carp that sealed victory once again for Gary Setchell taking his tally of victories to 5. The late carp together with a tench caught right from the off and another carp gave Gary a match winning weight of 11lb 14oz.

In second place with two lovely bream & a few bits for 9lb 12oz was Mr Cook fishing a Method feeder.

In third place with the biggest fish of the match, a 6lb 10oz Mirror, together with a small skimmer for a total of 6lb 11oz was Chris Russell.

Big thanks to everyone that took part. We are holding a presentation evening in the Restaurant on the 17th October for those anglers that have taken part in any of the matches this year, ask at the Main Office for details.
